The HTC Vive is already a strong contender on the virtual reality market. It looks like there is soon going to be a cordless version coming out as well, meaning that players won’t have to worry about cords getting in the way, tripping over, and generally taking away from the fun of the situation. Quark VR and Valve are working on the cordless technology together, and it is thought that there might be a prototype at some point in 2018.
So how will the cordless headset actually work? Up until now, the only way to enjoy VR wirelessly has been to use a mobile phone, which is then limited by the phone itself. The HTC Vive cordless will use a transmitter, which will work using WiFi to transmit between computer and headset. This avoids having to put any more components into the headset, but it will only work with very powerful computers and excellent wireless networks.
